Christmas Is Coming!
December 25th is just around the corner, and the kids in our Child Development Program have been getting in the Christmas spirit this week! The kids got a chance to explore their creativity as they worked on some special Christmas crafts. (Thank you, North Lindale Church, for donating the materials. They were put to great use, and they put a smile on all the kids' faces!) Since we want to encourage the individuality of every child that we work with, all the kids had the opportunity to choose their own project and decorate it any way they liked. Afterwards, they got a chance to show off their craft to all of their friends, and then decorate the home with their artwork. It meant so much to the kids that they could keep the projects that they made, as it’s rare in the orphanages for the children to have anything for themselves. Something as simple as a colorful foam Christmas craft was transformed into a treasure they could call their very own.
This week, we also read a few books about the first Christmas and the birth of Jesus. We talked about what that means to us and why it makes this such a special time of year. Even though we don’t have things like snow or steaming mugs of hot chocolate or stockings hung up by a fireplace here in Liberia, we still were able to celebrate the magic of the season with these kids.
